05.6. Aspects of the bilateral relationship

Diplomatic relations between the Argentine Republic and Japan began on February 3, 1898, with the signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation. Over time, both countries have deepened their bilateral relationship. In 2016, the leaders of both countries confirmed their status as strategic partners.

In 2026, the 128th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations will be commemorated. From the origins of the relationship at the end of the 19th century to the present day, the bilateral bond has been strengthened and expanded to various areas, including trade, investments, energy, technology, science, education, defense, culture, and sports.

High-level visits in both directions are an essential aspect of the bilateral relationship. Throughout history, presidents, prime ministers, foreign ministers, ministers, and representatives from both countries have visited each other. In 1959, the first visit of a Japanese Prime Minister to Argentina took place, when then-Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi visited Argentina. In 1961, the first visit by an Argentine President to Japan took place when then-President Arturo Frondizi visited Japan. The most recent visit by an Argentine President to Japan occurred in 2019 (then-President Mauricio Macri). The most recent visit by a Japanese Prime Minister to Argentina was in 2018 (then-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe).

Our country was also visited on several occasions by members of the Imperial Family of Japan. In 1967, Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko visited Argentina. This was the first visit by members of the Imperial Family of Japan to Argentina. The most recent visit by members of the Imperial Family of Japan to Argentina took place in 2014 (Their Imperial Majesties Prince and Princess Akishino).
